Himachal Pradesh · Kullu District · 1,200–2,050m

The valley everyone pictures when they say "Himachal."

Kullu–Manali,
District Guide

Kullu town sits at 1,200m, Manali further up-valley at 2,050m, about 270km from Chandigarh (9–10 hours) or 570km from Delhi. It's the valley most first-time visitors picture when they say "Himachal," and it earns that reputation: the Beas river running the length of it, Rohtang Pass at the head of the valley (open roughly May–October, snow-dependent), and enough adventure sport to fill a week on its own.

Rohtang Pass & Solang Valley

3,978m, the traditional gateway to Lahaul–Spiti and Ladakh. Solang below it runs paragliding, zorbing, and snow activities depending on season.

Old Manali & Hadimba Temple

Café-lined lanes above the main bazaar, and a 16th-century wooden temple set in a cedar forest: Manali's two most-photographed corners.

Bir Billing & the Beas

Bir Billing is one of the world's best paragliding sites; the Beas below Kullu town runs grade II–III white-water rafting, April through June.

Kullu Dussehra

A UNESCO-recognised intangible-heritage festival every October, with village deities processed through Kullu town over seven days. Worth timing a trip around.
