Tea garden terraces in Kangra valley, Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh · Kangra District · 730–2,080m

The softer face of Himachal.

Tea gardens under the Dhauladhar range, McLeodGanj's monastery quiet, Pragpur's heritage lanes. Best in October light: fewer switchbacks, more time to sit still.

Kangra,
District Guide

Kangra valley sits at around 730m, with McLeodGanj rising to 2,080m against the Dhauladhar range, roughly 250km from Chandigarh (6 hours) and 470km from Delhi. It's the gentlest terrain we run in Himachal: real elevation change without the altitude risk of Spiti or Kinnaur, and a genuinely different character: tea gardens, Tibetan culture (McLeodGanj is the seat of the Dalai Lama), and heritage architecture at Pragpur. Best October through March; avoid the July–August monsoon.

McLeodGanj & Bhagsu Falls

Home to the Tibetan government-in-exile and the Dalai Lama's residence: monasteries, Tibetan markets, and a short walk to Bhagsu waterfall.

Triund Trek

A 9km day trek from McLeodGanj to a ridge with the Dhauladhar range close enough to touch. No technical skill needed, just a full day.

Kangra Fort & Tea Gardens

One of the oldest and largest forts in the Himalayas, and the tea estates around Palampur: a different, calmer pace of sightseeing.

Pragpur Heritage Village

India's first designated heritage village: cobbled streets, mud-plastered facades, and a slower pace than anywhere else on this route.
